How it works

Multiply length × width × depth, with every measurement in feet, to get cubic feet. Depth is usually measured in inches, so divide it by 12 first. A cubic yard is a cube 3 feet on each side, which is 27 cubic feet, so divide by 27 for cubic yards.

Example

With length 10 ft, width 10 ft, depth 4 in, how many areas this size 1, the answer is 1.23 cubic yards.

Tips before you buy

  • Round your order up. Suppliers usually sell in half or quarter yards, and running short costs a second delivery fee.
  • Loose materials settle and compact. Add about 10% for gravel, soil and mulch.
  • For material-specific answers, like bag counts or tons, use the mulch, gravel, soil or concrete calculators.
