How it works
Square footage is the area of a flat surface in square feet. A rectangle is length × width. A circle is π × radius², where the radius is half the diameter. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2, where the height is measured straight up from the base, not along a sloped side.
For an L-shaped room or an irregular yard, split it into rectangles and triangles, calculate each one, and add them together. Measurements with inches should be converted to decimal feet first: 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft.

Tips before you buy
- Measure wall to wall at floor level and round up to the nearest inch.
- To convert inches to decimal feet, divide by 12. 3 inches is 0.25 ft, 4 inches is 0.33 ft, 9 inches is 0.75 ft.
- Include closets when ordering flooring, and subtract large built-ins like kitchen islands if the floor won’t run under them.
