How it works

Wall area is the room’s perimeter times the wall height, minus about 20 square feet per door and 15 per window. The calculator adds your pattern allowance and divides by the coverage on the roll label, rounding up to whole rolls.

Patterned paper has to line up from strip to strip, which wastes part of each length. The bigger the pattern repeat (listed on the label), the more extra you need.

Example

With room length 12 ft, room width 12 ft, wall height 8 ft, doors 1, windows 2, coverage per roll 56 sq ft, extra for pattern matching 15%, the answer is 7 rolls.

Tips before you buy

  • Buy every roll from the same batch or dye lot number. Colors vary between batches.
  • Get one extra roll for repairs later. Discontinued patterns can be impossible to match.
  • Some labels list “single roll” coverage but the paper is packaged as double rolls. Check which one you’re counting.
